A tired Essendon outfit will use this week’s match against cellar dwellers Fremantle as an opportunity to rest up to 14 players, coaching staff confirmed on Wednesday.
“It’s a long season and we want to be playing good footy at the back end of it,” said coach John Worsfold. “We’re confident that the 22 blokes we put on the park can get the job done, but a dozen or so won’t make the trip over. Let’s just call it general soreness.”
The Bombers are brimming with confidence after dismantling Melbourne in round two and getting within 70 points of Collingwood on Anzac Day. They will head into Saturday’s match with high expectations against a Fremantle side that has been gutted by the absence of spiritual leader Zac Dawson, who has been sent back to the local Auskick clinic to work on his decision-making.
