Despite his status as the most high-profile signing to arrive at Essendon since Mark “Shotgun” Williams strutted through the door in 2010, Jake Stringer says keeping his head down and earning the respect of his teammates remains his first priority.
“Forget that I was All-Australian at aged 21, forget that I was the Bulldog’s leading goal kicker in a premiership year,” said Stringer. “This is a fresh start for me and before I do anything, the most important thing is to keep my head down, work hard, and earn the respect of my new teammates.”
According to club sources, Stringer has hit the ground running at Essendon and is a certainty to start in the midfield, win this year’s Brownlow, and then probably the next four after that. But he is keeping things in perspective.
“Just taking it one training session at a time, keeping a low profile that sort of thing,” he says. “Do you think I’d look good with cornrows?”
